From Stephen Schaub “I really dislike it when film or paper is sold under a different name and the identity is kept “secret.” This is now the case with CatLABS X 320 Film which is- in fact- Kodak 5222 Doubl…” Source: CatLABS X Film 320 is Kodak 5222 Double-X While I’m happy that more film stock is being reintroduced, I do agree this is a bit shifty.Read more

Andre Kertesz’s Photos From His Window
I’ve always enjoyed Andre Kertesz work particularly his polaroid shots and also the ones from his apartment window. Here’s an interesting article in the NY Times about him that details the shots from his apartment on Fifth Ave. The photographer’s images of Washington Square Park revealed, with affection and longing, a Hungarian émigré who was an outsider in his adopted land. Collaborative Large Format Scanner Comparison
Source: Collaborative Large Format Scanner Comparison This is an older study of mostly older scanner technology but its still interesting to review and compare the different machines. The difference between detail and also DR can be seen between the older professional / prepress machines and the newer consumer products like the Epson flatbeds.Read more
Leica: To M-D or not to M-D? – Guest post by Adam Singer – 35mmc
Very well written and quite funny article by a friend – well worth the read! So a man walks into a camera store – stop me if you have heard this one – and says, ‘ I want that new Leica MD’. That’s the full frame all singing but no dancing digital Leica without a screen, auto ISO, and white balance. Just frame and shoot, but you can’t see your pictures till you find a computer to play the SDRead more
EKTACHROME is back | Graphic Communications
Kodak bringing back Ektachrome film is really good news! It’s a transparency/slide film with a distinctive look with vivid color, great tone and contrast. I’m very excited to see this new film offering since I’ve been shooting a lot of transparency for color work because its much easier to “scan” and keep the color and tonality right (at least in my opinion). Travel Horror—What Happened When My Film Was X-ray Scanned 11 Times – DigitalRev
While I was waiting for my transit flight, I felt an itch to go for a totally non-scientific experiment – let the films (without the lead bag) in my carry-on baggage go through x-ray machines Source: Travel Horror—What Happened When My Film Was X-ray Scanned 11 Times – DigitalRev I’m about to head out to photograph some cool rock formations in NW New Mexico and am thinking about what cameras to bring and which films. Excitement! Another new film offering – Bergger’s New Pancro400 Offers A New Look For Black and White
These days when something is announced that has to do with film, its usually the discontinuation of an emulsion or beloved type of film. Today is different: Bergger has announced a new type of film and its even going to be available in sheets too! Large format Yeah! I see you can order 4×5, 5×7 and 8×10 sheets which are in stock now. Their site shows a cost of 25 sheets of 8×10 at $176 which works out to about $7Read more
Kodak’s Downfall Wasn’t About Technology
Harvard Business Review article on Kodak The first digital camera was invented at Kodak. Kodak invested big money into commercial digital cameras early on, and they even bought some on-line photo sharing businesses. So why if they had invested significantly into technology, why did they still fail to jump the gap when it came? This article goes into a lot of detail but clearly a lot of big companies failed to see that the internet could reach directly toRead more
Local Darkroom finder
I’m lucky, I live in walking distance to one of the largest public darkrooms in the country, the Harvey Milk Photo Center. It’s got something like 45 enlarger bays in their darkroom, a film processing area, a digital lab, and some class rooms. I just came back from printing in the darkroom tonight and wondered where I might go if I wasn’t in San Francisco. A quick google pulled up Local Darkroom. It’s a web tool that allows youRead more
Traditional darkroom print vs Inkjet print of scan
In a previous post, I shared some scans of images I took at the ghost mining town with my Hy6 and 40mm Schneider PQ lens with Ilford Delta 3200 film. I made some very nice traditional darkroom prints from these negatives that I was quite happy with. I really liked the look of them a lot. The printing paper I used was some very old Ilfobrom 3F fiber based paper that a friend had given me. I could have been olderRead more
The Rilex: A little known American made press view camera
I came across Giovanni Savino’s blog post today detailing the Rilex press camera – a camera I’ve never even heard of until now. Made from polished cast aluminum and machined parts, it’s a neat little camera for sure and simply amazing that a husband and wife team built over 800 of them on their own perhaps in their evenings. This takes 2.25 by 3.25 sheet film (6×9 ?). I have a Grafmatic 6 sheet holder that I bought forRead more
