A Just Noticeable Color Difference
For a long time I’ve wondered what kind of image test could reveal a camera system’s ability to accurately capture color tonality and separation. Grapes, peaches, apples, leaves on a tree, skin and all kinds of things really aren’t just one color but a whole range and often speckled with lot’s of small bits of color. Some sensor’s like the fat pixel Kodak pro MFDB sensors do a great job with this when shot at base ISO but a lotRead more

Anthony Luke’s not-just-another-photoblog Blog I landed on this photoblog by chance after searching for photos of Ama Pearl divers which I had just learned about and thought was interesting. Digitizing Negatives with a Camera – Revisited – PhotoPXL
I used to scan mostly with my Rolleiflex 6008AF and Ixpress / Hasselblad CF528 microstep back and a Schneider Makro Symmar lens in the m39 shutter adapter. I still think that those ‘scans’ were the best scans I’ve achieved so far, however it was very time consuming to set up the focus because the focus was critical. Here’s an article that details how to get your scanning set up aligned and parallel to the negative which I think is reallyRead more
Looking at Bokeh
How to characterize the styles and traits of different lenses Many lenses draw with different characteristics and often have family/brand traits, but it’s sometimes hard to see those differences. Often times the only way to see them is to look at the out of focus rendering. This article will be mostly a place for me to put some images into the same spot and to hold my notes, but I’d love to hear from others who have studied this inRead more
Kodak Tri-X vs. Ilford HP5 – A photo comparison by The Darkroom Photo Lab
I thought this was a very useful film stock comparison and wanted to post it both for other and also so I can come back to it. Personally I mostly shoot T-Max 400 and Ilford Delta 3200, but now that I’m shooting 8×10 and 11×14 I’ve started to shoot a lot more Ilford film stocks since they are available and less expensive. What film stocks do you like? WHAT DO YOU LIKE? Kodak Tri-X 400 classic grain structure, contrast, deep blacksRead more

European Month of Photography
European Month of Photography EMOP or European Month of Photography: That is your excuse for your next European vacation – or at least it might be mine! I was just looking at the web page for the EMOP Berlin – which was held from Oct 1st to 31st in 2020 and realized how cool that would have been to be there. I always enjoyed the photo exhibitions that coincided with Photokina. The cities which have EMOP are Athens, Berlin, Paris,Read more
AuRA Rotary Assist Film Developing Machine by Viktor Falendysh — Kickstarter
Here’s a rotary film processing assistant on kickstarter that looks very well made. I’m curious about how much difference in processing times a rotary drum makes, and whether drum speed, reversal matter. I see that the AuRA’s standard processing turns fast for 30 seconds then slows down. Is this really the equal of agitation? Should a vane or other protrusion be put in the drum to assist with mixing? I’m guessing that the film reels will provide enough opportunity forRead more
