{"id":843,"date":"2021-04-19T12:06:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-19T19:06:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/historic.camera\/?p=843"},"modified":"2021-04-19T12:06:26","modified_gmt":"2021-04-19T19:06:26","slug":"did-you-know-you-can-archive-your-digital-photos-on-analog-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/historic.camera\/?p=843","title":{"rendered":"Did You Know You Can Archive Your Digital Photos on Analog Film? |"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those who diligently perform DAM or are interested &#8211; a new worry for you&#8230; bit rot.\u00a0 Nope, not just with files stored on CD or DVD ROM.\u00a0 \u00a0This is in addition to the regular updates in terms of long term data storage technology.\u00a0 I think Dr&#8217;s offices are the slowest to adopt new tech &#8211; I mean you still have to fax over referrals, and they will give you a copy of your X-ray on CD.\u00a0 I mean new computers haven&#8217;t included a CD reader option for years.\u00a0 Big storage keeps changing.\u00a0 You have to migrate your files from the old storage to the new storage all the time.\u00a0 So in addition to bit rot, there&#8217;s also the chance it can be corrupted during a migration.\u00a0 \u00a0Store your files in the cloud?\u00a0 Okay but even those companies can have issues &#8211;\u00a0 my hosting company was bought by another company and some stuff was lost in the changeover to new servers.\u00a0 Not a lot, but it can happen.\u00a0 Some of the 500# Gorilla&#8217;s offering cloud storage can decide to compress your cloud files or make other changes.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the great thing about film &#8211; no format changes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty stable over time if you store it well.\u00a0 Anyhow the below linked article on F-stoppers was pretty interesting.\u00a0 I did not know even Hollywood is making film recordings of their digital movies for long storage.\u00a0 \u00a0The way to go from a digital file to an analog negative is called &#8216;film recording&#8217;.\u00a0 And there are companies out there that still provide this service.\u00a0 About 15 years ago, art galleries and contests still wanted to review slides so I had to get some slides made from my digital capture.\u00a0 Actually they are still pretty amazing to look at.
